In all of my 8 years of working full time in internet marketing and helping local businesses with increasing their phone calls through SEO, social media, mobile marketing, reputation marketing and more, I’ve never had Google warn me before spanking me.
Google has been more like a dad who drinks too much and then one day you get slapped across the face so hard you end up on page 5 of the search engine… and didn’t even see it coming.
Starting April 21, that’s all going to change.
Daddy is warning us:
“On April 21st, if you don’t change, I’m going to hit you so hard you may need to find another occupation!”
And this slap is being called “Mobilegeddon”.
According to a recent Google blog post, the search giant is currently working on a major algorithm change that will revolutionize the way mobile friendliness is determined. Starting on April 21, this new algorithm will be gradually rolled out worldwide, affecting mobile searches in all languages in all corners of the globe.
Check out these stats:
I saw this coming a couple of years ago.
Google released a book in 2011 called “The Mobile Playbook” and inside was this page:
What stuck with me? “ACTION ITEM: YOUR #1 PRIORITY IS TO BUILD A MOBILE WEBSITE!”
So I wrote a book about it in 2012 – “Mobile Marketing Mania” (you can find on Amazon)
Inside this book, I talked to local businesses about how to market on mobile and dominant their competition through QR codes, text marketing, mobile apps, etc…
My prediction back then was that mobile internet usage would overtake desktop usage by 2014 and it happened. At the end of 2014, for the first time in history… more people are searching the internet on their phones and tablets than their desktops.
We created a new branch in our company –GeorgiaMobileWebsites– and now have over 100 different companies that we maintain, host, and track their mobile sites.
After trying several different platforms, the one we use now is second to none. The tracking capacity alone is one of the reasons 99.5% of our clients have NEVER canceled that service. Once they see the increase in calls, it is a no-brainer at $37 a month.
Was it a necessity back then to have a mobile website and to be mobile friendly? Not really… but it helped with SEO and with phone calls and overall… the experience of the customer. No more pinching and squeezing a screen to see what it says.
That ALL changes April 21st. Daddy gave his second stern warning at a conference.
This month, a member of Google’s Webmaster Trends team, was quoted at SMX Munich as saying that the new mobile-friendly algorithm change will have more of an impact on search rankings than either Panda or Penguin, two of the largest and most impactful search algorithm updates Google has ever launched.
How to test if your site is mobile friendly?
1) Click here and type in your website url
2) Go on your phone and search for your services or your company where you are listed…
And you see something like this:
As you can see Deans Construction isn’t mobile-friendly…
and we’re building one this week for them
“Are you prepared to take the chance of losing
up to 60% of your traffic for less than a night out
at McDonald’s with the family?”

I hope this helped you and whether you let us help you or not, don’t put this off,
Trey
P.S. You have options before April 21st:
-
You can learn to build one yourself and pay $1 more a month… and go through the learning curve and the “do-it-yourself” site will NOT have all the features of ours…
-
Or you can let us handle it all – the building, the setting up, and the maintenance. A company that has built hundreds of mobile sites.
-
Or you can do nothing and hope it doesn’t affect you. But if you’ll do a search on your phone, just ask yourself if you’re ready to take the chance of losing 50-60% of your website traffic… over the price of a McDonald’s meal for two?
